Dr Sean Nguyen is an experienced Clinical and Imaging cardiologist with special interests in echocardiography, stress echocardiography and cardiac CT including CT coronary angiography (CTCA) and calcium scoring.

Originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Sean graduated with Honours in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Ottawa before moving to Australia in 2009. He was awarded his medical degree at the University of Queensland and completed his residency and physician training at Ipswich Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital respectively.

From 2017 to 2019 he completed advanced training in Cardiology at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Cairns Hospital training under the team here at Northern Heart Specialists.

After being awarded his Cardiology Fellowship from then Royal Australasian College of Physicians, he completed a multimodality cardiac imaging fellowship at Princess Alexandra Hospital. He is qualified in stress echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography and structural echocardiography for PFO/ASD closures.

During his fellowship, he also obtained the highest level of CTCA qualification recognised by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiology (Level B) during his fellowship. He remains the only specialist in North Queensland to hold this qualification.

Sean inherited from his grandfather a passion for teaching and drive to clearly communicate information to his audience whether students in the classroom or patients and their family on the wards. Sean will always make sure his patient walks out understanding their medical condition and how the treatment plan will help them.

He is a primary supervisor for Cardiology Advanced Trainees with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the James Cook University School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Sean’s wife Hannah is a local GP in Cairns and together they live with their son Connor and golden retriever in Redlynch. They have adopted the true Far North way of life enjoying the outdoors whether it’s tennis, hiking, running, cycling, swimming or teaming up together for the Cairns Ironman. Once concertmaster of the Queensland Medical Orchestra, Sean still enjoys playing violin.
